A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athlete assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Presently, there are separate national SAACs for NCAA Division I, II, and III. NCAA legislation mandates that all member insitutions have SAACs on their respective campuses. Further, NCAA legislation requires that ll member conferences have SAACs.
From NCAA Division III Manual:
Section 6.1.4 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Each institution shall establish a student-athlete advisory committee for its student-athletes. The composition and duties of the committee shall be determined by the institution. (Adopted 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95).
Section 21.8.6.10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Composition. The student-athlete advisory committee shall consist of 24 members, including at least four members from each of the four geographical regions per Constitution and eight members serving at large. The committee shall include at least 12 men and at least 12 women, and at least six ethnic minorities. No more than two student-athletes from a playing conference may serve on the committee at any time. Two Management Council members shall serve as ex officio members of the committee. (Adopted 1/14/97, effective 4/2/02). Term of Office. A student-athlete member shall not serve more than three years on the committee and may not be reappointed for another term. Student-athletes may serve on the committee up to one year after completion of their intercollegiate athletics eligibility. A member shall commence service on the first day following the member's election. When a student-athlete member leaves the committee, the student-athlete shall be replaced by a student-athlete from his or her partner conference who may serve up to three years on the committee. (Adopted 1/14/97, effective 8/1/97). Management Council Service. The committee annually shall elect two members (one male, one female) to serve on the Management Council. To be eligible of Management Council service, at least one committee member shall have completed at least one year of service on the committee. Committee members shall be eligible for no more than two years of service on the Management Council. (Adopted 1/14/97, effective 8/1/97). Duties. The committee shall receive information on and explanation of NCAA activities and legislation and shall review and react to topics referred to it by other Association committees and by the Management Council. (Adopted 1/14/97, effective 8/1/97).
